  • Repair ECHO chainsaw
Clutch on my ECHO chainsaw finally gave up the ghost. Middle of winter here with trees falling. Ordered replacement part from ereplacement which was easy to identify via their parts diagram. Arrived within a few days. Fit appropriately and chainsaw was back in action. As easy of an online transaction as one could hope for. Not my first online purchase with this company. I will continue to return to them for replacement parts.

    Replace clutch assembly

    Tool Type

    Chain Saw

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    30-60 minutes

    Tools Used

    Socket set, Hammer and punch

Remove the outer housing. Remove the chain bar and chain. Remove excess dirt and foreign material. Removing the old clutch assembly is the most difficult part because the clutch assembly has to be struck with a hammer and punch to remove from threaded shaft. The thread is a left hand. Once removed, clean the area and replace the clutch assembly. Reassemble the chain bar and housing.

    , Hammer and punch

Removed clutch assembly, by turning the spring as a left-handed thread. The punch was placed on the shoulder of the “Y” piece of the spring assembly. Then all pieces were removed and replaced. There is a socket available that will fit the front of the spring assembly, and using an impact can remove the spring assembly.

Screwdriver, :Hammer, cold chisel,3/4\\\' plug wrench and old starter rope.

First I removed the spark plug and put an old starter rope in the hole to stop the piston moving without damage to it. I put the chisel on the off side (right hand side) of the clutch and tapped hard to remove. I then replaced the washer/plate clutch and reversed the above process tapping the clutch back on the crankshaft.(this time hitting the left side)

    Chain derail near drive inlet

    Stephen - December 13, 2016
    Tool Type

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, Hammer, rope, spark plug wrench

I first changed to a new bar and chain; problem persisted. Then I went to also change the sprocket and needle bearing, and noticed the clutch washer excessively worn, so I obtained the both washers. I don't have any experience to know whether this solved the problem, but the only other thing that I can change is the bar hold down itself.

In order to remove the clutch, with the bar and chain already off, remove the spark plug and feed some rope into the cylinder. Keeping the engine upright so the rope does not fall into the intake or exhaust ports, turn the clutch CCW (for the left-handed thread holding it on the crankshaft) until the piston stops against the wadded rope. Then take a large screwdriver against a good surface on the clutch and pop it with a hammer CCW. Reverse the above to complete the process.
