Spring was broken, and the roller arm had a groove in it..
Bail spring: unscrewed the bail arm, took out screw holding cover in place, removed spring holder and took broken spring out. put new spring on the spring arm and pushed it back into place and quickly put cover over it. Then using the edge of the screw driver I aligned the spring arm and the torsion spring into their holders and screwed the bail arm back into the reel.
