I have an American Standard faucet in my bathroom that needed a new washer cartridge
Tool Type
Faucet
Difficulty
Easy
Time
Less than 15 minutes
Tools Used
Screwdriver, Power Drill
The problem developed suddenly one morning
I had two replacement washer cartridges on hand and decided to replace the old cartridges with these parts.
The cold water faucet cartridge replacement was no problem, the hot water faucet had a flat head set screw that secured the cartridge that was rusted and would not loosen.
1) I tried coating the screw first with CLR and then WD-40. The flat head screw still did not loosen and by this time the screw slot was becoming damaged.
2) I decided to use a 3/8" drill bit on an electric drill to tap-out the flat head screw.
3) Once the screw was off, I only had to remove the old cartridge with an adjustable wrench and replace the old with the new cartridge.
4) I ordered a replacement plastic handle adapter that mounts into the faucet handle as I anticipated the existing plastic part may become damaged when I drilled out the brass screw.
