    1. Removed the top cover.
    2. Removed both the side covers.
    3. Removed the chain brake assembly. This was difficult because the brake was engaged. When I got it pried off, the spring that activates the brake was in the relaxed position making it impossible to get it back on one the new handle was installed. Struggled for an hour trying to get the spring and internal cams to go to the unlocked position. Finally had to screw the assembly down to the workbench and using the new handle, cock the spring into the brake off position. Once this was done, the reassembly was a breeze. The original problem was that the brake was engaged when the handle broke and I was unable to reset it. Make sure that the brake is released before you remove the brake assembly.

Went to Youtube and through fine tuning the search to poulan chainsaw hand guard, found a video produced by eReplacementParts for a different model of Poulan which provided detailed instructions. Had to modify the instructions somewhat, but the repair went easily.

Remove stop spring assembly from the side of the saw, this provides access to the space that the emergency stop handle fits into and snap the new hand guard into place. Put the screws for the stop spring assembly back in place and tighten everything back down, and you should be ready to go.
