1. removed what was left of old guard assembly - couldn't get the retaining screw to turn, so basically had to pry it with screwdriver until it popped out.
2. installed new assembly - luckily the housing wasn't badly damaged by popping the old assembly out, so the retaining screw locked the new assembly in place.
3. suggest not running over the trimmer with your car.
