Plastic Hand on the starter pull rope broke after 30 years of service.
Pulled starter rope out to full extension. Tied rope to throttle lever so it would not retract back into the engine. Using needle nose pliers, I pulled the knot on the end of the pull rope out of the broken handle (rope was still in good condition), and used the pliers to untie the knot. After removing the rope end from the broken handle, I threaded it through the hole of the new handle and tied a double knot. I then untied the rope from the throttle lever and let it retract back into the engine.

Have used the new handle twice and everything is working fine.

Do you have instructions for the installation of the grip starter rope? I only need to replace the handle.
Thanks,
Susan Seidler
Hi Susan Your starter rope handle may have the rope concealed in the pull handle under a little sliding cover on top. See if that is the case and pry the cover off. If you get to the rope underneath, pry it out and untie or cut the old knots off of it. Do not let go of it as the starter might retract it all into its' housing, so clamp something on your pull rope where it goes into the mower itself. Rethread your rope into your new handle, put some loop knots in it to hold it and you're done.

Like ShotOut says, secure the rope before attempting. I suggest getting a small pvc pipe or a rod and pull the rope out a bit. Tie the rope around it so it doesn't pull back in. If it slips out of your hand while you are attempting to replace the handle, you are talking major work trying to get the cord out and still have tension.
