Took it apart. Hot wired the motor alone. This is the dangerous part. Know which wires are which! Used Ohm meter to measure speed control. No connection. Pulled wires out of speed control. Pushed wires into new unit. Done

The variable speed function on my almost 30 year old Bosch 1581 jigsaw was failing, causing the saw to speed up and slow down of its own accord.

The repair was extremely easy: remove four screws to release the top handle and swap out the part (it's exactly the same and the wires just pop out and pop back in). Five minutes and done.

There were 2 repairs: 1. The old clamp screw was not working well. Replacing the clamp screw took about 10 minutes. 2. The Governor had failed so the saw only worked at full speed. I looked at some

Both repairs required taking off the handle. The clamp screw backed out as expected but it didn't just fall out, I had to take the handle off and remove the old screw which had gone crooked inside the assembly. Putting in the new screw was trivial and it works well.

Replacing the governor required removing the handle and disassembling the handle to get at the old governor. I had some trouble getting the 2 halves of the handle apart, but eventually succeeded. After that it was easy: Just unplug 3 wires, pull out the old governor, put in the new governor, plug the 3 wires back in. Reassemble the handle then reattach the handle to the saw.
