Questions & Answers for Line, Fuel Return

Return line where it enters tanks shrank (diameter-wise) allowing gas to leak. Line that was in tank was also stiff.1) Is this shrinkage normal?2) Would it be less likely to occur if ethanol-free gas was used?3) How long should the line last before stiffening/shrinking?
Gary for model number 725r asked on 2022-05-21
After time the Fuel Return Line will become brittle, shrink and crack and will need to be replaced be replaced every 10-15 years or whenever any sign of damage is noted. The return hose was brittle and fell apart , and the fuel line was ready to start leaking as well
On the return line I used a very thin to slip inside the hose so I could guide it to the hole in the gas tank, worked very well, it was long enough to remove from the opening in the top of the tank , the fuel line was a little trickier because the filter needs to go in from the top of the tank , and the nipple has to be forced through the opening in the bottom of the tank, I used a piece of flat iron that was narrow enough to fit through the tank top opening, I bent the end of it so it would fit over the top of the filter , about a 45 degree angle, and was able to push it in place , then put the fuel line on and the lock ring , and then pushed the other end on the nipple to the bulb, make sure the return line isn't in to far in the tank or the motor wont run

Fuel Leak
The fuel line and filter, primer and hose assembly, and the fuel return line had deteriorated over time and were leaking fuel. I found the parts here and ordered them. When the parts arrived, I removed four screws from the rear cover on the engine, pulled off the old hoses and put the new ones on. I screwed the rear cover in place and was done in about 30 minutes or less.

The primer bulb was degraded and leaking gas. The primer hose to the carburetor was degraded and broken. Other hoses were degraded and brittle.
1. Remove all the torx screws holding the outside covers in place. Remove the left cover.
2. Remove the old primer bulb assembly from the right cover. Disconnect old fuel lines as required.
3. Draw or take a picture of the throttle control trigger in the right cover, then remove it and the cable from the cover.
4. Remove the throttle cable from the right cover and set it to the side. It won't go far because the kill switch is still attached.
5. Removed the gas tank and all old/broken hoses/parts.
6. Installed the fuel line in the bottom of the tank. (This requires pulling the filter hose connection through the small hole in the bottom of the tank from the inside. Do not use pliers. Just feed the end of the hose through the hole and apply a steady pull to the hose and wiggle it around. The piece will pull through without breaking anything.)
7. Install the new return fuel line (mine was blue) on the primer bulb assembly.
8. Cut a bevel on the other end to make it easy to feed it into the side hole on the gas tank. This hose was a little long, so I had to cut about an inch off to make it fit correctly.
9. Install the fuel line (bottom of gas tank) to the connection on the cylinder side of the carburetor. This requires good light and long needle nose pliers, unless you want to remove the air filter. (this also removes the carburetor.)
10. Install the primer bulb in the right side cover with the short (clear) fuel line to the front.
11. Connect the front line (clear) to the fitting on the intake side of the carburetor.
12. Push the rear line (blue return line) into the hole in the side of the gas tank.
13. Re-install the throttle cable and trigger assembly to the right cover.
14. With the right cover in place, but not screwed down, and without replacing the left cover, add fuel to the gas tank and check for leaks.
15. Press the primer bulb several times to be sure it is operating properly and there are still no leaks.
16. If all is good, replace the left cover and install all the mounting screws.

Note: I had not used my blower for about 5 years, so I had to do the fuel/air mix setup found in the manual and replace the spark plug. Runs like a dream and no gas leaks.

No fuel getting to the motor; rotted fuel return line.
Ryobi edger, around 15 years old. Replacing the fuel return line was fairly simple; lots of on-line youtube videos. Knowing the return line was rotted, I expected the fuel line was bad as well, so I went ahead and ordered it. Good thing as it disintegrated as I was replacing the return line. Getting the replacement line through the fuel tank with the new filter was a lesson in patience. What I wasn't prepared for was the 3d fuel line, from primer to the engine. Most of that line was hidden beneath the cowl cover so I wasn't expecting it. Sure enough, when I finished replacing the first two, the primer line broke off. I did not have a replacement line, but, I had enough of the old fuel line to shave it down and use it as a temp fix. I know I need to replace that line and probably the plastic primer button. Lesson learned...when one line rots, plan on replacing the entire set up.

Fuel supply and fuel return lines were cracked and brittle
1) Remove carburetor / muffler cover (4 screws)
2) Remove fuel and fuel return lines
3) Remove fuel filter from inside of gas tank
4) Thread small gauge wire up into gas tank through fuel supply hole
5) Insert hose end of new fuel filter hose over the wire in the gas tank
6) Feed fuel hose down along the wire. Wire acts as a guide to line up the new hose.
7) Pull wire and hose through hole in tank
8) Seat fuel filter
9) Discard wire and connect all hoses
10) Replace carburetor / muffler cover

I had a Ryobi weed trimmer that i took to two shops for a tune and replace old fuel lines...both shops recommended i buy a new one as the cost of repairing the item was going to likely run $90-$120 and it was pointed out to me that i could buy a new one for $120...after figuring what parts i needed it cost under $50 and my time (1 hour).

Watched a YouTube video on replacing fuel lines and general tune up...looked up my brand/model on ereplacementParts.com and they had all the parts listed for any repair i might have...i selected the parts mentioned in the video and paid for them in the easy check out... they were delivered within a couple days...I watched the video again and re-assembled my parts and the trimmer started right up...the next day i was trimming about an acre of weeds n grass..

This was my first time using ereplacementParts.com. For me everything went great..i highly recommend them to anyone trying to repair your own equipment...

Fuel line cracked, filter dirty
In fixing my Yardman YM1500 fuel system, I purchased parts from ereplacement. When the parts arrived, I removed the old filter and fuel line by pulling them out with a pair of pliers. I then pushed the new filter in from the inside of the tank, using a screwdriver. Connected the line back to the carburetor. And works like a charm!!!

It is often a pain to find that one part you don't expect to be able to find and isn't easy to find an off the shelf substitute, but eReplacementParts did it quickly and at a very reasonable price.

Excellent parts, successful repair, and extra part
Primer bulb and fuel line arrived as advertised. The company video provided excellent instruction when it came to installation. The result was a trimmer that now works! Somehow I ended up with two primer bulbs maybe I hit the order button twice?
