Product Information
Description:
This is an original part from Craftsman for use with Craftsman Snowblowers. The fiction wheel assembly meshes with the friction disc, causing the drive wheel axle to turn. The most common reason for replacing the friction wheel is when the snowblower’s wheels don’t turn. This part is sold individually. Disconnect the spark plug wire before installing this part. The tools that you will need to replace the friction wheel disc are 3/8” socket, 9/16” socket, adjustable wrench, hammer, 1/2” socket, flat-head screwdriver, and lubrication.

replace friction drive wheel on snowblower
I read the instructions in the snowblower manual. The friction wheel was to be unbolted followed by loosening of the shaft holding the wheel so the old wheel could be removed and the new one replaced. The instructions were to unbolt the bearings but not remove the shaft. However, while trying to remove the old wheel, the shaft came out. Replacing the shaft was VERY DIFFICULT. There are two bearings each with a washer, a chain to mount on the gear, and a yoke with two washers, all in a very tight space. If I were to do it again, I would try to remove and replace the friction wheel by only loosening the bolts on the bearing near the chain. This would hopefully prevent the chain from coming off the gear which was the most difficult part of reinstalling the shaft.

Snowblower drive weak
Replaced drive belt and auger drive belt. Replaced drive disc and tensioner spring and pulley. Snowblower 14 years old and all parts were original. Machine would stop driving forward into snow banks. Drive disc worn and drive belt loose. After repairs machine drives like new and all parts fit perfect. I was able to read machines ID label and order the exact right parts from the parts diagrams. I am a professional mechanic so for me it was easy.

No drive on snowblower
1. Empty fuel tank.
2. Pull stater key.
3. Move throttle to stop.
4. Disconnect spark plug.
5. Put/ flip snow blower up on intake housing.
6. Remove bottom cover plate, wheels.
7. Remove bolts of drive shaft bearings (1 on each side, 2 bolts per side).
8. Remove right side support (by moving clip and slide out.
9. Take picture of gear assembly for reference, then remove drive shaft with friction when disc. The washers for the shifter connection fall off, one for top one for bottom.
10. Remove old disk from drive shaft assembly (3 bolts).
11. Place new disk on drive shaft assembly.
12. Clean excess oil, dirt, grease form inside of housing. Insert drive shaft in place placing bearings with washers on the ends (held in place with low temp grease), CAREFULLY inserting the sprocket on drive shaft on driveshaft into drive chain. (This may be challenging.)
13. Reconnect shifter to friction disk assembly per your photo above. (This is a little tricky)
14. Insert and tighten bolts for shaft bearings. Rotate shaft as needed to check operation.
15. Replace wheels, LIGHTLY grease shaft, if needed.
16. LIGHTLY grease chains if needed. Remove any excess
17. IMPORTANT!!! Remove all grease on friction plate and disc with solvent.
18. Replace bottom plate, place in operating position.
19. Add fuel, attach spark plug wire, insert key.
20. Start and check function.

Snowblower wouldn't drive
Just try to take apart as little as possible. The parts get a bit wobbly when reconstructing, but a few adjustments and it went back fine.

Snowblower wouldn’t propel.
Replaced friction wheel. Looked up YouTube videos on how to do it. It is relatively easy if you have ok skills with hand tools. Make sure you clean wheel and plate after install because you’re likely to get grease and dirt on it.

Drained oil, because had to tip snowblower forward.

Followed the manufacture's repair instructions, which were pretty easy to understand. What was missing was to tie up the chain sprocket to get out of the way for access to the drive wheel parts. No adjustments were required.

Best place for older machine parts
I found a part for my 20 year old snow blower here. Even though the part was temporarily out of stock, it did come quickly as soon as the part was available. I have ordered from here other times and have never been disappointed. When your machine gets older and name brand companies quit carrying parts, this is the place to go.
