fan was broken
Removed all front end components took more than 30 min. to realize the shaft holding the fan assembly bolt was right-hand threads. Then it was a matter of minutes. 😁
Advise to the wise. If you have a Kirby, remember the fan assembly bolt comes off clockwise.

Bearings were loud.
The whole motor must be removed. Bearings might be hard to separate from shaft. Soak in liquid wrench. Not Too much! Be careful pulling bearings off! This is hard depending on how long they have been on. Mine came off easy. But I can see how hard it might be.

Great Website for Parts
Having the equipment diagrams is invaluable to taking the vacuum apart - and the replacement fan came with ancillary parts too! That old 25 year old Kirby is purring like a kitten now!
