2. Pulled out drum starter (big mistake)

4. did not know drum started was connected to spring
5. Took a long time to rewind spring by hand
6. Made sure rope was tight
7. Reassembled
First time doing this, wish I knew what I know now.
It took 4 hours to figure out because I did not know how to rewind the spring and I did not get the rope tight enough.
Finally figured it out.
Drum starter teeth broke off on engine side of Echo 3400 model.

Parts Used
2. Removed starter assembly from engine. Removed rope guide on case of assembly
3. Removed drum starter, leaving spring assembly as is....untied and removed rope which was not broken.
4. Removed rope through housing, untied rope from handle.
5. Installed rope on new drum starter.
6. Installed drum starter on starter assembly, wound spring several turns, then pulled rope end through starter assembly and rope guide. This required several attempts and a little fiddling.
7. Reinstalled rope guide, clamped rope with locking pliers to prevent rope from over winding, reinstalled handle & un-clamped rope. Tested starter assembly for tension and full recoil of rope.
8. Reinstalled starter assembly on chain saw engine.
Works fine....took some patience.
