Specifications
  • Thread 18 TPI
Description:
When you use a compressor the air that is compressed inside the tank will condensate and leave water inside the tank.
If it is left in the tank too long it can start to rust out the inside of the tank.

The Drain Valve should be opened up and let the water drain out.
The water will build up if you have a tendency to leave air in your tank for a long period of time.
You should drain your tank after each time it is used to prevent this from happening.

The original drain valve would not function properly (valve threads stripped)
I used penetrating oil to release the original equipment drain valve from the compressor tank, as it had rusted. I sprayed several applications of the oil onto the stem threads of the compressor and allowed 10-15 minutes between treatments. I didn't want to risk damaging the threads of the stem.

It was then easy to remove the defective drain valve. I applied teflon tape to the threads of the new valve, in order to facilitate removal in the future.

The replacement valve is working good again.

Drain valve broke
The old drain valve had rusted badly and I broke off the handle. With a little persuasion I used a wrench to remove the old valve. I cleaned up the threads in the tank with a small wire brush. I applied a little Teflon tape to the new valve and threaded it in place. Works great now.

Compressor drain defective. Air filter dirty.
Removed old drain valve that was defective with a wrench. It would not open to release fluid in compressor. Once the compressor was drained, I screwed the new drain valve in place snugly, and simply pulled the filter out and placed the new one in. Done!!!

Question: C2002 Type 7

wahoo1953

The drain valve has left hand thread and smaller than 1/4" what is the part#? Where can I buy it ?
WJA
Hello wahoo1953,

I have searched every Porter Cable C2002 that I can find. And they all use the same N286039 Drain Valve, which is much larger than the one you are describing. You may want to locate a compressor repair service facility in your area and see if they have the one you are looking for.

Question: Replace Drain Valve

rholmber

Is there any special things about replaceing the valve that I shoud know?

Hello rholmber,

You should have no problems replacing the N286039 Drain Valve. Just thread it in to the tank until it stops. You shouldn't tighten this to much. Just snug.

Question: Drain Valve A17038

ronmacias

new drain valve will not screw in. Any suggestions?
Hi ronmacias,
Do the treads look the same? They coat the threads with a heavy loctite and this is at times is put on so thick that its hard to start the threads. Also make sure the drain fitting hole is link removed a lot of cases we have to wire wheel the red coating off the valve and use a little teflon tape.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Question: Drain Valve

H75JRoss

This valve doesn't stop the air from coming out and the compressor continues to run.
I need to know if this is a part I can replace without having to take the compressor somewhere to be fixed. The compressor is less than a year old.
Hi H75jross,
What you need is Drain Valve Part Number: A17038.Hope that helps.Good luck.
Tinker
I have the same problem that H75JRoss has with a leaking drain valve. "Can the drain valve be repaired at home if i order a new one". Tinkerdave never really answered the question.
WJA
Hello alfour,

To replace the part number, A17038 is a rather easy fix. Make sure all the air is drained from the tank and the compressor is unplugged from the power source. Grab a wrench that will fit the nut. Remove the old drain and replace it with the new one. Close the valve by hand with the knurled knob. Power up the compressor and you should be good to go. Remember to drain the tank often, to keep water from building up in the tank.

Hope this helps,
-WJA
Question: Water

Calvin

My compressor spits out too much water through the hose.
You need to drain water from bottom of tank thru part # A17038 (drain valve). This has to be done on a regular basis to avoid tank damage from rust.
