Screwdriver, Pliers, Vise grips, metal lathe, Dremel tool, terminal crimper
Parts Used
2. Several modifications were necessary for installation of new "Infinite" switch (control.)
3. The proper included adapter was selected to allow use of original knob.
4. Said adapter required shortening (lathe) and the groove for the knob "key" required lengthening (Dremel Tool.}
5. The pre-scored shaft of the new control was shortened to proper length using Vise-Grips to support shaft near control end and pliers on the end to snap off.
6. It was necessary to modify two (user supplied) 1/4" long aluminum electronic spacers (lathe) to allow the switch control to be mounted deeper inside the range mounting panel. Two longer 8-32 screws were needed to complete this step. All this was required to set the knob the proper distance from the front surface of the range control panel.
7. Although the push-on terminal connections were in somewhat different locations on the new control switch, there was sufficient slack in the wiring to make the connections. The only issue encountered with the wiring connections was that the Pilot lamp terminal of the original control switch was a smaller size than the new control switch. An adapter was made from a short piece of appliance wire. The supplied large female terminal was crimped (terminal crimpers) on one end and the smaller male terminal (user provided) was crimped on the other end. The small terminal end was liberally insulated with electrical tape as that end connected to the original terminal now "dangling" in the air.
Results: Control switch is an excellent match with burner element. Stability of burner element temperature at any given setting is very good. Heat vs. switch position is very close to original obsolete control. A fair amount of time/effort but considering the cost of new ranges I feel it was well worth it.
