Garage door opener was not lifting door because of stripped threads on lift connector on screw drive unit.
Took cotter-pin out pulled pin from lift attachment ; pulled released the to allow lift unit to slide off screw unit ; removed nut from bolt @ end of support rail above door / pulled bolt out of wall attachment ; moved rail to the left away from wall attachment to get just enough room for defective slide to slide off the end of rail - replaced with new slide making sure it was on facing the right direction ; used a lever to reattach rail to wall attachment / reinstalled bolt and nut / pinned the lift arm back to lift slide / placed cotter-pin. " VERY IMPORTANT " LIFTED THE DOOR A FOOT OR TWO then reset the release to the screw-drive. I found out that since the failure of the unit replaced failed when attempting to lift the door it had stripped the threads from the release bar in the unit and they were blocking a reset by lifting the door you cause the reset to happen on cleaner threads. Push button and verify actions of door problem fixed. I am very satisfied with ease of fixing my door-opener. I needed a ladder to be @ right height to do most of the work , pliers , two adjustable-open-end wrench or the right size wrench to fit bolt and nut , a lever to help realign the bolt when reinstalling overhead rail. Hope this helps you if you chose to do you own repairs.

Genie screw garage door was hanging up and slipping or stopping all together.
The carrier that travels the screw was stripped. Didn't know for sure until I took the old one off but as soon as I removed it you could see the missing threads.
The repair was simple: Removed the one bolt that holds the end of the screw up to the mounting hardware, removed the pin that connects the carrier arm to the carrier, removed the stop limit switch [since the wire was fastened to the ceiling] to allow room to move the worm gear to the side. It took a little pushing on it to get enough room between the wall and the worm gear to slide the old carrier off and to put the new one on. Once it was back on I reassembled it, raised the latch and it was ready to go.
