The square area under the head is designed to fit into a square hole in the work piece it measures 5/16-18 x .75. It is this square hole that restrains the bolt and keeps it from turning when the nut is tightened.

2. Removed worn out shave plate
3. Installed new shave plate and bolts - tighten loosely
4. Install two side shoes - tighten loosely
5. Adjust height of side shoes
5. Tighten all carriage bolts with nylon lock nuts
Caution" Old shave plate may have a worn on sharper edge due to contact with side walk and or pavement. Suggest you use light gloves to mitigate cut hazard.
