• Worn brushes are often the cause of a poorly running motor
• Replacing brushes can fix an intermittent motor
• New brushes can restore a motor’s electric braking

Carbon motor brushes are one of the most commonly replaced power tool components.  Because carbon brushes are wear items, meaning that through friction and use they will gradually wear away, they will eventually require replacement.  Worn brushes are common causes of intermittent motor function, reduced electric braking, and reduced motor power.  A worn out brush will often be worn down near the wire lead and may be cracked, pitted, or burned.  When replacing carbon brushes, be sure to also inspect your armature for burns, cracks, or other damage which indicates a larger motor problem.

Broken brush; motor wouldn't turn or would turn slowly.
Makita palm sander; Took a little figuring to get it apart; had to pry the bearing out of the sanding pad. Need to be sure all the screws are taken out before pulling it apart. Brushes went in fine.

Dropped sander and broke 3 of 4 feet.
Removed plate and split case. Slid the broken feet out and slid new feet into place. I replaced the brushes since I had split the housing and had easy access to them. Made sure wires were properly routed and retained before re-assembling and blew out sanding dust. Case screws are different lengths but are NOT easily mixed up. Nothing tricky about the repair and parts fit perfectly.

  • these went in perfectly
what do you say about brushes - I got these with some other parts to fix up my trusty Makita corded ⅜" drill - all the parts, including these brushes, fit perfectly - the whole operation took maybe 15 minutes and the drill works like new - so much better to fix good tools than to throw them away and replace them - I feel like I'll get an other 30 years out of this drill - if I last that long myself - otherwise the kids will insert them along with tools from MY grandfather - and they will all be working.
