• Worn brushes frequently are the cause behind a motor running poorly.
• Replacing brushes can fix a motor that’s operating intermittently.
• New brushes can restore a motor’s electric braking.

Carbon brushes are one of the most commonly replaced power tool parts. This is because carbon brushes are wear items, meaning that through friction and use they will gradually wear away until they need replacing. Worn brushes are a common causes of intermittent motor function, reduced electric braking and reduced motor power. A worn-out brush will often be worn down near to the wire lead and can be cracked, pitted, or burned. When replacing carbon brushes, be sure to inspect your armature for burns, cracks, or other damage which can indicate larger motor problems.

Old brushes were worn out, so motor would fail to run properly.
1 - Remove 5 screws that secure the two motor housings together.
2 - Opened up the housing to reveal the motor and grinder gears and bearings.
3 - Lifted out the motor from the housing.
4 - used a pair of needle nose pliers to grip the ends of brush #1 on one side of motor and pulled it out from the motor slot. Repeated the same step for brush #2.
5 - Pushed the new brushes into the old motor slots.
6 - Replace motor back into housing with bearings and gears.
7 - Secured the motor housings back together again with the 5 screws.
8 - Plugged in the power cord, and the motor / grinder ran perfectly again.

Sander loses power when engaged in work & wobbles when engaged in work surface

Inserted brushes and re-assembled the tool. It still has the same symptoms, guess it's just worn out. I can't see anything else visibly wrong with it but it is 20 years old.

    Refurbishing on old grinder
I have an old Makita 4” grinder and wanted to freshen it up. These guys had the parts I needed and shipped them out promptly. Thanks!

    Perfect Fit
The brushes on my MAKITA angle grinder were worn out, and I use this tool all the time. Rather than buy a new one, I bought some new brushes for the motor, for a lot less cost than a new grinder. These brushes fit perfectly, and the grinder is back in business again. Hopefully for another 10 years. Thank you, eReplacementParts for having the correct parts that I needed,
