As a temporary fix I taped up the boot with electrician's tape and was able to finish mowing.
When the new boot arrived I cut off the old boot and replaced it with the new one.
The new boot was a very tight fit and I'm not sure it slid on as far as the old one which may keep the wire from making good contact with the plug, However, the mower is working fine for now.

The hardest part was moving the fuel tank out of the way to get to the coil. After that, it was easy. I put everything back together and set the gap between the flywheel magnets and coil at 0.010, the engine started right up! Yay!
