How difficult is it to change the auger belt?
Dean for model number 536.887990 asked on 2022-11-21
Hi XXXX, Thank you for your question. This repair is not too difficult. Before doing this repair, make sure that the engine has cooled and to prevent the engine from accidentally starting, remove the wire and boot from the spark plug. When doing this repair, make sure there is little or no fuel in the tank. To start, remove the screws securing the belt cover, so you can remove it. Then remove the belt from both the auger drive pulley and the idler pulley. Then, tip the snowblower forward, so that it rests on the auger housing and remove the frame cover. Then use a wrench to loosen the belt retaining bolt, so you can remove it. Next, depress the drive lever and use a clamp to hold the lever in place. Then remove the auger belt from the drive pulley and lift the drive plate to remove the old belt. Then feed the new belt under the drive plate and through the housing. Then loop the belt onto the auger drive pulley and remove the clamp to release the drive lever and reposition the belt retaining bolt and tighten it. Then reinstall the frame cover and secure it with the mounting bolts. Put the snow blower back in the upright position and align the new belt on the engine drive pulley and the idler pulley. Then reattach the belt cover and secure it with the screws. With the repair complete, reattach wire and boot to the spark plug and fill the tank with fuel. The snowblower should now work for you. If you have any questions, please let us know. We are open 7 days a week. We look forward to hearing from you!

Auger belt was worn out
You don't follow sears direction to remove and replace the drive belts for the drive wheels and the auger. There are 6 bolts that hold the auger hood and drive pulley and auger in place. Remove the top 4 bolts the hood and auger will tip forward. Now you can remove both belts with relatively ease. To remove and replace the main drive belt you must remove the auger belt first. I suggest that when you change either belt that you change both belts at the same time. I forgot to say to remove the belt plastic cover first. You can see which belt is bad.

Snowblower drive weak
Replaced drive belt and auger drive belt. Replaced drive disc and tensioner spring and pulley. Snowblower 14 years old and all parts were original. Machine would stop driving forward into snow banks. Drive disc worn and drive belt loose. After repairs machine drives like new and all parts fit perfect. I was able to read machines ID label and order the exact right parts from the parts diagrams. I am a professional mechanic so for me it was easy.

Read manual, it's a pain, but it you just have to pervasive. Replace both belts. GOOD LUCK!!

Both belts were burned and stretched
Had to separate the auger housing to expose the belts after the belt cover was removed.
Used a half inch socket and wrench to break the machine apart.
I could not remove the old belts without breaking the machine apart.
I replaced the drive belt first, then I replaced the auger belt.
Putting the machine back together was some what difficult in aligning the bolt holes up to reinstall the frame bolts.

The belts I ordered came in a timely fashion and fit perfectly to the manufacturer specifications. I was able to refurbish a free snow blower for short money and quickly.

    Perfect replacement
Didn’t think I would find parts to repair my 12+ year old snowblower but ereplacement parts came through! Instead of having to spend $900 on a new snowblower, I bought $300 worth of parts from ereplacement parts and I am back slinging snow!
