How to Replace the Switch on a Skilsaw Worm-Drive Saw

Finish Nailer Repair - Replacing the Driver Guide (Ridgid Part # 79004001022)
Skilsaw Switch

Does your saw not turn on? If so, you likely need a new switch. The worm-drive saw uses a basic toggle switch that breaks the circuit on both the hot and the neutral wires. After thousands of cycles (and years of use), the switch will wear out. Testing for a bad switch can be easily done using a multi-meter.

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE SWITCH   1. Unplug the saw.

a. Disconnect the saw from its power source.

  2. Remove the switch.

a. Use a screwdriver to remove four screws that secure the handle half.

b. Remove two large screws that secure the base and the top of the handle.

c. Separate the two halves of the handle.

d. Remove the screw that secures the switch to the housing.

e. Pull the switch away from the housing.

f. Note the location of each wire before disconnecting the old switch.

g. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the wires from the old switch.

INSTALLING THE NEW SWITCH

  3. Install the switch.

a. Refer to your notes to determine the correct location of each wire.

b. Connect the wires to the new switch (using the four screws).

c. Install the new switch assembly into the housing.

d. Secure the switch with the screw.

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT

  4. Reinstall the handle.

a. Tuck all exposed wires into the handle assembly (to prevent pinching).

b. Install the top half of the handle.

c. Install and tighten the two large screws to secure the base and the top of the handle assembly.

d. Install and tighten the four screws to secure the two halves of the handle.
