How to Replace the Cooktop on a Coleman Road Trip Portable Grill

The main function of the cooktop is to act as the drip tray for the cooking grates. The cooktop also has the hinges for the lid attached to it, as well as the grease drain in the bottom. After hundreds of burgers and steaks, the cooktop assembly will have plenty of baked-on grease that simply won't wipe off. The most common reason to replace the cooktop is to clean up the grill and make it look new again. Other reasons to replace the cooktop are a loose or a broken hinge, or if the grill gets knocked-over (bending or denting the cooktop).

Let's get started.

REMOVING THE COOKTOP   1. Remove the cooktop.

a. Use a screwdriver and a wrench to remove the hinge bolts that secure the lid.

b. Remove the lid.

c. Remove the grill grates.

d. Use a screwdriver to remove the six screws that secure the cooktop.

e. Lift the cooktop away from the grill.

f. Note: If the burner screens fall off when you remove the cooktop; simply place the screens inside the cups around the burner.

INSTALLING THE NEW COOKTOP

  2. Install the cooktop.

a. Place the new cooktop onto the grill.

b. Align the cooktop with the frame.

c. Align burner screens with the cooktop.

d. Secure the new cooktop with the six screws.

REASSEMBLING THE UNIT

  3. Reinstall the grates.

a. Place the grill grates back into the cooktop.

  4. Reinstall the lid.

a. Place the lid back onto the unit.

b. Secure the lid with the bolts and nuts.

c. Do not overtighten the hardware (the bolts should still pivot to allow the lid to be opened and closed).
