After looking at a bunch of websites and just finding misinformation, I called Bosch tech support and got the right info. The proper way to install the toothed drive belt on a 1274DVS belt sander. Is to take the top of the machine off and lower the toothed drive pulley slightly to remove the old belt and install the new one. Probably eight to ten screws, some of which are the star type. All of the websites I visited said just force the belt over the pulleys retaining "washer" which I had done on a previous belt change and it stretched the belt so that after a very short time the belt would slip past the cogs. The only thing to watch for as this is done is not to lose the brushes.

    Belt broke

The belt can not be stretched over the drive pulley because it has a flange.

I removed the upper motor cover which is held on by 8 or so T20 Torx / flat blade combo screws. Access to some of these screws requires popping the black top cover off. This is easily done by inserting a flat blade screwdriver into the slot at the center of the back edge and prying.

With the motor cover off, all of the gearing is free to move and you have a chance to blow the dust out and grease the bearings.

The drive pulley has a 20 mm octagonal flange. my metric set ends at 19 mm 3/4 inch is too small 13/16 is too big. I used my Crescent wrench while holding both the axle shaft and the crown gear still to unscrew the pulley.

After that it's easy. Slip the belt over the driven pulley and the drive shaft and screw the drive pulley back on and reassemble.

The only reason to remove the motor cover is to allow you to provide reaction torque when unscrewing the pulley. Next time I think I'll try tapping the wrench to break the torque.

Sander got too hot and parts started melting or rollers were hard to turn

    Ray - August 1, 2022
I had two belt sanders to repair. One had melted parts the other didn’t track well. Everything I replaced went smoothly. Adjusting the belt sanders with the new parts is what took the most time. Parts came in fast.
