Genuine Makita replacement part, this item is sold individually.
The purpose of the 231806-7 Tension Spring is to raise and lower the telescoping lower guard.
When you make a cut the Lower Guard will raise up inside of the upper guard, as you get to the end of your cut the Spring will cause the lower guard to return to it original position.
The spring is attached to the Lower Guard and also to the upper Guard housing.

    Blade guard spring broke on circular saw

    , Needle nose pliers, Circular saw wrench to remove blade

    1. Removed circular saw blade
    2. Held spring with needle nose pliers
    3. Slipped each end of spring into small holes on opposite side of blade guard.
    4. Replaced saw blade.

    Fortunately I had an identical saw available to use as a reference. Location of the attachment holes are quite small but easy to find if if you have a reference. Only took 5 minutes to complete!!

    The safety cover had been cracked and misaligned

    Missing safety shield.

    With the wrench you remove the blade.
    Remove the retaining clip.
    Fit the shield onto the shaft housing.
    Replace the retaining clip.
    Install the return spring.
    Install the shield arm with the screw.
    Replace the blade.

    Saw fell off the back of a pickup & broke the blade guard and some parts were damaged.

    Removed lock bolt for shoe slide. Lowered shoe out of the way. Removed large snap ring. Guard return spring was missing. Removed broken guard & replaced with new one. Forgot to mention that the guard stop was removed to allow it to drop for clearance. Installed new spring & rubber stop. Finished by replacing remaining parts

    Wouldn't cut on.

    Old power cord showed significant fraying, so 99% probability that was source of problem. Replaced several minor springs, blade guard lever, and cord and strain reliever. Old cord attached with crimped connectors I did not have so cut and spliced and soldered to new cord. Insulated with shrink wrap.
    Reassembled. Cleaned, repainted metal components, and looks nearly new (Makita). Saw originally belonged to my wife's grandfather. Lots of memories attached. Had passed onto me, then my son and finally quit on him. Sweet to have it running like new to keep the story going.

    Hook one end of spring in hole on saw guard, stretch spring and hook other end on bar near top of casing. It fits a little differently depending on which direction you hook it in, so try it both ways to see which you prefer.
