The hub Eps spring would bend out of shape and not allow the cord to recoil back in saw.
I removed 4 screws holding the housing and removed the housing from the saw, then removed the screw holding the old pull start assembly and removed it. I placed the new recoil spring in the housing and then the cord hub, the eps spring and outer retainer that engages the flywheel. I found that the screw holding the assembly to the flywheel was too short. When tightened it would not allow the string to recoil. I put a small washer under the shoulder of the screw which allowed me to tighten the assembly and also allowing the string to recoil. The washer was not included in the kit or mentioned in the instructions, so you have to improvise. I made it by cutting a wire termination end which turned out to be the right size on the inside and outside. I had been dealing with this issue for some time and Poulan customer service gave me no help in resolving it.

Parts Used:
Starter Recoil Spring - 545008013
Repair Difficulty:
Hard
Time Spent Repairing:
1-2 hours
Tools Used:
Screwdriver, Pliers, Tongue depressors, wire cutters
Chainsaw starter recoil spring came loose
1. Placed new spring in the recessed cavity provided, still tightly coiled and bound by the nylon strap used by ereplacementparts for shipping.

2. Inserted two tongue depressors on edge through the vent louvers (Poulan Pro 2075) to hold coiled spring in the recessed cavity.

3. Carefully guided the spring’s end hook into its retaining slot.

4. Carefully clipped 2” sections of the restraining nylon strap and removed them.

5. Carefully removed the tongue depressors, while using my thumb to keep the tightly coiled spring from bursting out of its recessed cavity.

6. Finished replacing the starter rope spool and the starter rope without incident.

ADVICE: This is a tricky operation. Be patient and deliberate. Don’t let that coiled spring burst out of its recessed cavity or you will be right back at Square One.
