Trigger switch
Remove the torx screws (star shape) on one side of handle only.
Remove that side of handle and look at the way the switch is mounted.
Notice the way the wires are tucked in between the switch and handle.
Wright down the color of wire going to which screw terminal on the switch.
You\'ll need to remove the switch and the 4 screws in the switch holding the wires.
(Caution) Put the 4 wires, exactally as they were on the old switch.
Tuck the wires as they were before you started, reassemble the handle.
Make sure you didn\'t pinch the wires, replace the screws and tighten.
Test switch with a continuity tester between the two straight blades.
Squeeze the trigger, if the light on your tester comes on you can plug it in
And try it.
If the light didn\'t come on it\'s wrong!!! STOP!! GET HELP!!!

In addition to the 1619X01356 base you may want to replace the two 2610317088 they seem to wear out often.

How do I remove the basplate on my skill77 with magnesium plate? The pin is impossible to remove.

You may want to try a little heat on the 1619X01263 pin. Usually this will help persuade it to come out.

Question: Baseplate (foot)

1068683

is the baseplate on the mag version of the HD77M the same as the -17 or the -72? Yes, I know the 77M plate is aluminum, but after using it on cement, it is a little rough for woodwork. Hoping the -17 steel plate will fit.

Hello 1068683,

There will be no problem at all installing the standard Skil HD77 base plate on your HD77M. It is part number 1619X01350.

Has anyone tried substituting type 17 worm gears in a type 16 skilsaw? I have a model 77 '50th anniversary issue' worm drive and the gears are shot. Apparently the type 16 gears are no longer available, but since these saws didn't change much over time, I'm hoping the newer ones fit. Anyone?

Hi Kent,
In answer to your question. The type 16 and type 17 gears are both different sizes and the housings are not the same. You might try some local repair centers to see if they have any of the older gears.

My wormdrive was sparking a lot on the back, replaced the brushes and is still sparking a bit more than normal. What else could it be?

Hi Robert,

The sparking you are seeing through the rear vent holes on the saw is caused by a bad armature. Many different things can cause the armature to go bad but the most common causes are using too long of an extension cord that is too small gauge or cutting in a manner that causes the saw to pull more amps than it can handle. (Such as deep cuts in concrete, etc.) The armature will need to be replaced.

There may have also been damage to the field. When you open the saw you will want to look for signs of burn or melted insulation on the armature and field. The field can also be tested with a multimeter set to test impedance (ohms). To test the field take an impedance reading from one side of the coil and then the other. The number you read from each side should be within a few ohms of the same. If it isn't the field is bad.

The armature is part #2610931892 and the field is part #1619P02674. Both of these parts are available from http://ereplacementparts.com.

Good luck with your repair!

Most likely the armature. It's about $60. Look for a little black spot on one of the commutator bars or connections, all it takes is one and the whole thing is no good.

Question: Skilsaw Model 77

I am looking for some parts on a skilsaw. I can't seem to find the right model number on the parts page. The model number is a 77 not the HD77. serial #1B504000. This is an older saw. What I am wondering is if the the parts are the same? What model number is the closest?
Thanks Paul

Hello KLS,

The gears for the type 16 and type 17 are different and not interchangeable. Unfortunately the manufacture has discontinued the parts for the type 16. So either find a type 16 with good gears or time to purchase a new one.
