How tough is it to replace the flex shaft ?

Hi olddogtom,

Replacing the cable is really a pretty easy project. You will start by removing the trimmer shaft from the engine unit. Once removed the old cable will pull out of the shaft. Take the new cable and apply a bit of automotive type bearing grease to it. Now just slide the new cable into the shaft and reattach the shaft to the engine.

I hope this helps,

Is it difficult to regrease a cable? My friend has a Black and decker GH 1000 and it heats up a lot at the base where the trimmer head sits. The cable looks great, but it is old. I was thinking soaking the base end of the cable in diesel over night to clean out the dirt and try and regrease it. The motor runs so well, she just doesn't want to part with it. Opinions?.....Thanks

Greasing the drive cable ends should pose no problem. IF you can get the cable OUT, Clean and then grease the whole thing well. When installing, reverse the ends when putting it back in. This will help it last longer. Here is the parts list for the B&D GH1000.
