Hi Jay,

There are three things that will need to be looked at to diagnose a problem with the brake on your mitersaw. The brake operates by the switch sending current to a brake coil within the field. The brake coil is reverse polarity of the normal polarity of the motor. Charging the brake coil stops the blade magnetically.

The problem could be with the switch itself. It may not be switching over to allow current to the brake coil. The motor brushes could be causing the problem. If they are not making good contact with the armature then the braking circuit cannot be completed. The brake coil itself may have failed. This is the least likely cause of the problem but it does happen. In fact we have a Ridgid mitersaw in our shop right now with a failed brake coil.

The new switch is part #823493. The brushes are part #816768. The field is only offered by Ridgid as part of the entire motor assembly. It is part #828125.

Vibration is most likely a mechanical problem...first make notice of the vibration with and without the blade..sometimes it is as simple as a blade out of balance or bent..you may have some end play with the spindle..minor gear wear or a gear that has moved on the spindle...and of course.. a bearing ready to go out..[spindle bearing and possibly an armature bearing.. a good repair shop should be able to remedy fairly economical..

Craig" thanks craig.i took it apart the arbor bearings and armature appear smooth and no play i can feel??.it does work ok without the blade but then there's no load on it right.around here they want 75.00-100.00 to diagnose it plus parts and labor.for that price i guess i'll live with it.

ouch.. sorry to hear that..:(
Did you eliminate the possibility of it being the blade..? if you eyeball the blade as it is winding down and it wobbles ..it could be the blade..the back blade washer could be worn or grooved causing a excessive run out....[try a new blade if possible..borrowed?]
and cheese whiz ....what ever happened to free estimates..?:confused::)

no it does this even before you reach the table.when you initially pull the trigger it does it for a quick second just enough to make your board move.tried a different blade same thing.i don't expect a free estimate but it's just more than i want to spend.before it's over the price could get up to the price of a new saw.thanks.
