2. Clean up all the parts.
3. Find this website and order part. Wait for part to arrive.
4. Grease the spring-loaded height adjustment button so it's easier to move. Slide all the bits back on in order, put the bolt back in. All done!
You should just expect this to be a regular wear part. Maybe buy two. It gets a lot of abuse, and it's relatively cheap, and it's only a matter of time before it flies apart. Ours lasted 3 summers, and we have a very rocky "lawn". This plastic ball actually held up longer than the the steel one used to on the similar Ariens machine we used to have before this one — that one was lucky to last just one season. The sleeve part that goes up above the cutter plate where the strings attach, is cracked too but it will work for now. I think if that breaks I'll be able to fix it with plastic pipe. All in all this has been a very friendly machine for us in our rugged marginal backwoods mowing situation.
