Product Description ?

This OEM Poulan Chainsaw Bar Adjustment Kit is used to adjust the tension of the bar to keep the cutting chain tight for proper operation. It includes Retainer Ring, Pin and the Adjustment Bolt. Chainsaw chains stretch during normal operation and begin to sag on a saw's guide bar. If a chainsaw chain is allowed to become too loose, it can easily come off the bar during operation and serious injury or damage can occur.

    1) Need to break snap ring holding adjust screw in recess of the cover
    2) Make sure cog is facing up towards top of saw- diagram looks like cog is on bottom (can be fixed after, but have to semi-remove adjust screw by tilting out and up and slide out of back retainer at screw end...)

The chain drive sprocket had broken teeth and the whole drum assembly needed to be replaced. Also, while I had the saw apart, I decided to install a new filter, and a new chain tensioner.

The chain tension kit and the filter were simple replacements, but the drum assembly was a small challenge. I removed the out cover to expose the drum assembly. You Tube has some good videos connected with replacing the drum assembly, but basically you have to use a piston stop of some sorts. The pros suggest using a piece of cord to jam the piston, but this did not work for me. Instead, I removed the spark plug and used a wooden dowel slightly smaller than the spark plug hole. This worked well and were no concerns in ruining the piston or rings. Once the piston is arrested you will note that the retainer has reverse threads. Most drum assemblies are marked to show which direction to either tighten or loosen the retainer. simply use a screwdriver or whatever to knock the retainer loose and back it off. Once the retainer is off it is simple to replace the assembly, taking note of any washers or bushings that were removed in sequence. Replace the chain and cover and then re-tension the chain. Save yourself a lot of money doing it yourself. I am a logger and the professional chains I use are very hard on the drive sprocket. Now that I know how to do this, it will save me hundreds of dollars a year. My parts arrived quickly and were to exact specifications.

Have Poulan Pro PP4218AVX chain saw. Took off old clutch cover with "tool less" bar adjustment, and threw it in the trash where it should be.
Then I put on the new clutch cover, using two 8mm x 1.5 flange nuts, adjusted the chain using a screwdriver, and tightened the two flange nuts with a 13mm socket. DONE!!!!!
Works great, better then new. Why do you think the best saws don't have "tool less" bar adjusters? ( Hint ) Because it is junk.
P.S. Website says clutch cover does not come with bar adjuster, but mine did.
