Quick, straight forward fix
I received a gearbox assembly for my TroyBuilt 4-cycle string trimmer. The assembly arrived with a new string spool and 3 new torx screws. After removing the old gear box (the gears had turned to metal dust), I slid the new gearbox on the lower shaft, installed the two longer clamping screws and the short screw which threads into the hole in the shaft. Approximately 10 minutes to swap out the old gearbox with the new.

Remove the two screws that clamp the gearbox to the shaft. Remove the single retaining screw that keeps the gearbox from rotating on the shaft. Slide the old gearbox off and the new one on to the shaft. Install the new retaining screw. Install the new clamping screws and you're done. Couldn't be easier.

Loosen 4 screws on trimmer gear box, then remove set screw. Slide old gear box off, then slide new one on and install set screw and tighten the 4 screws.

Need to make sure where the problem is. Once you've determined it's the gearbox. Remove two mounting screws and one position screw. Remove the old gearbox and install the new gearbox, with the new screws that come with it.
