Motor got really hot and melted the plastic holding the windings in place, which then jammed up the motor

Van - January 22, 2016
Tool Type

Rotary Hammer

Difficulty

Medium

Time

30-60 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Hammer

Took it all apart (about 11 screws on the housing) and gently pried it apart. The hard part was getting the motor shaft out of the housing, due to the melted plastic - I had to use a hammer and vice to drive the shaft out of the front bearing (in the aluminum bracket).

Ereplacement parts had a new motor housing (which doesn't have any plastic, so hopefully it'll last longer!) and a parts diagram so I could make sure everything went back correctly.

Mark your wires on the switch so you know how to put them back in. Oh, the cord wires have little screw terminals, but the motor housing wires have a little hidden tab you have to push in with a tiny screwdriver to release the wire.

All in all, it was great to fix the drill for $25 rather than buy a new one for $100!
