Salvaging a new blower that someone had ruined and put out in the trash

Stuart - November 16, 2020
Tool Type

Blower

Difficulty

Medium

Time

1-2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, Wrench Set, Nutdriver, torque wrench, thread-locker (per manufacturers specs)

I found this blower out with the trash at one of my neighbors. Cosmetically it looked almost brand new - but the engine was seized probably as a result of using straight gas. I took it completely apart (every screw/every nut) as a learning exercise and determined to fix it once I found out the retail price of a new blower.

The piston and cylinder were completely wrecked. It looked like part of a piston ring had gotten caught up on the edge of an exhaust port and there was metal everywhere except where it should be. A new cylinder is expensive, and I balked at paying for a complete cylinder/piston assembly so the effort languished. Luck would have it-I found TWO of the same machine lying on the side of the road a few weeks later. These were much older and pretty wrecked and missing most of the plastic parts. I took those apart and was able to salvage the cylinder from one which was worn but not too bad.

I had three examples of what happens when you don't take care of these machines - a rogues gallery of various forms of piston damage.

I ordered the piston ring set from ereplacementparts, along with a few gaskets. Actually being so new the gaskets on the unit were in OK shape except for the cylinder head gasket which fell apart as I removed the original.
