Missing cover plates

Nate - September 20, 2022
Tool Type

Planer

Difficulty

Easy

Time

Less than 15 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver

Simple as can be to apply the new cover plate:

1. Apply plate over hole.
2. Quarter-turn clockwise to hold plate in place.

Important thing to keep in mind: When taking the plate off, only do a quarter-turn counter-clockwise! If you keep turning until the screw comes out, the nut and washer will drop inside the machine!

V-belt driving the cutter broke

Fredric - May 21, 2020
Tool Type

Planer

Difficulty

Hard

Time

More than 2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, A lot of muscle!

1. Removed the top and side covers, and then removed the old belt which was easy because it was in shreds.
2. Because the new belt was such a tight fit, I watched a couple YouTube videos to determine the best way to get the new belt on.
3. I tried the two different methods demonstrated by the videos. Method one was forcing the belt over the pulley and method two required removing the pully, placing the belt on the pully and sliding the pully back on the shaft. I finally determined the best way was going to be method one and that I would need a 2nd person to turn the shaft while muscled the belt over the pully. This may sound simple in theory but because there is no stretch in the belt and because the motor and cutter are fixed in position with no tension adjuster on the machine to aid in replacement, this was no easy repair!
4. Eventually got the belt correctly mounted on the pulleys and the DeWalt planer runs like a champ!

Used Planer had missing "key" on wheel attached to cause noise and smoke and stink.

Ryan - March 22, 2016
Tool Type

Planer

Difficulty

Easy

Time

30-60 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Socket set, Dewalt Planer 735 Hex Wrench

There are many YouTube videos that will get you into the planer and have it apart. One thing I was interested in passing along to others though... Getting the belt off and back on again is a chore. I found using the socket wrench to turn the wheel as I was working the belt back on to be very helpful. It may help to use this method to work the belt off of the wheel as well, but I only discovered this putting the belt back on. I also put a drop of CA on the key to hopefully make it less likely it will be lost again.
