The teeth on the old part were in bad shape - from not tightening the chain often I would guess. Perhaps just worn naturally as I have had the saw for years and use it constantly.
The old part was removed and the new part went on in less than 5 minutes. It now functions perfectly.

Hello Dwayne, thank you for your inquiry. The original ( 125331-7) is no longer made, and the manufacturer has replaced it with this one(123886-6), so it does look different but functions the same. We hope this helps.

"Brake Drum Assembly" is actually a rather misleading description. The brake drum actually sits on the motor shaft and drives the chain. Every Makita electric chainsaw owner should be encouraged to buy chain oil, a replacement bar&chain combo pack AND a replacement Brake Drum Assembly. This part WILL wear and need replacement. The chain wraps around this part, travels down and back around the bar, so it is a VERY active part of the chain drive system.
a) Remove chainsaw side cover.
b) Remove chain.
c) Remove Brake Drum Assembly (no tools needed)
d) Replace Brake Drum Assembly
e) Reinstall chain and bar.
f) Reinstall side cover
