Hi Jeff,

I'm assuming you have a vertical shaft engine (287700). As you have probably found out it's not an easy feat, especially if the pulley has been on the engine for a significant time. If you haven't discovered yet there is a bolt that threads through the pulley unit from the bottom into the crankshaft. Typically the pulley set is a one piece unit that slides onto the keyed crankshaft snout and is machined to extend the bottom pulley well below the end of the crankshaft. After you remove the bolt from the bottom of the pulley (usually recessed into the bottom of pulley housing) I would suggest you use a good quality penetrating oil and liberally spray it into the bottom of the housing as well as around the top. Allow it to work it's way in, at least a half hour or more. Then without overdoing it or hitting the edges of the pulleys, sharply rap the sides of the housing with a brass hammer trying to knock it down (not easily done with virtually no room to work). I can't stress enough to not overdo it, the pulleys need to run straight and true after you're done knocking it around. If that doesn't do it then you may need to use some heat. Wipe off any oil and grease and heat the sides of the assembly that contact the crankshaft snout, apply enough heat to expand the housing, again don't over do it with the heat, you can damage the bottom seal or worse, trying to knock down with the brass hammer. ...and of course BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL with open flame, grease and oil can easily ignite, not to mention gasoline and gas fumes!!

There could be some sort of puller available for that job and perhaps someone could direct you to where you could find one, but I'm unaware of it. Good luck!

Hi Thomas,

It sounds to me like you may have a clogged carburetor. The carburetor can become clogged by dirt or other debris. The dirt may get by a damaged or missing air filter. It can enter through a crack in the fuel lines. Some tools use a foam air filter. Over time the filter itself will breakdown and create debris that will enter the carb and clog it. It is a good idea to replace the air filter at least once a year. If fuel is left sitting in an unused engine for more than a couple of months the fuel will begin to breakdown and go bad. As the fuel breaks down it will start to become gel like as well as begin to coat the internal parts of the carburetor with a varnish. The gel and varnish will plug the carburetor so that fuel can no longer flow through it. To get your engine running again you will need to either rebuild or replace the carburetor. When you replace the carburetor it is always a good idea to also replace the air and fuel filters. This helps ensure that more debris won't clog the new carburetor.

Hi Thomas,

Mark is right about old fuel and varnish. If that doesn't do it I would suspect the electric solenoid on the bottom of the fuel bowl. It shuts off the flow of fuel into the carburetor if it's not activated or malfunctioning. It should make an audible click when you switch from off to the run (not start) position on the ignition switch, if you can't hear it then you should be able to feel it. All the safety shut offs need to be employed or it won't activate either (clutch, mower deck, etc.). Hope that helps!

How is fuel leaking into the cylinder when it sets over night? I changed the float needle valve but I still have the same problem. The carb is clean.

Hi Glenn,

It sounds to me like the float is not properly set. The float is holding the needle open and allowing fuel to run through the carb and into the cylinder.

Hi Bill,

The alternator is located underneath the flywheel on the engine. There are a few different ones that may have been used depending on the application. If you can give me the colors of the wires and the wire connectors on both the alternator and the rectifier, if there is one, I can figure out which one you need. It is item #474 on the parts diagram.
