Porter Cable Router Armature Removal

When changing the armature bearing on the spindle-end of a Porter Cable router, the armature must be removed from the motor housing to access the bearing.

Dismantling a Porter Cable Router is fairly simple, although it can be difficult to remove the collet nut and armature from the motor casing.

All other repairs can be done without removing the armature from the casing.

We use the following tools for this repair:

• a cordless impact driver
• impact wrench
• press
• rubber mallet
• metal pick
• flat-head screwdriver
• a glove (for holding the armature when removing the collet nut)

The following step-by-step instructions accompany our video for this repair.

 

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.   Remove the base of the router.

2.   Mark the motor housing position for reassembly.

3.   Remove the housing cap screws on the top of the router, and remove the housing cap.

4. Using a flat-head screwdriver, remove the two brush caps on opposite sides of the motor housing. Then, use a metal pick to get the brushes out.

5.  Remove the screws holding the housing cap and motor casing together.

6. Using a rubber mallet, tap the housing cap until it comes apart from the casing.

7. While wearing a glove for better grip, grab the end of the armature and remove the collet nut counter clock-wise with an impact wrench.

(Hint: If you are having trouble removing the collet nut, try applying heat with a torch to get the nut to expand so it will come off easier.)

8. Place the motor casing facing down on a press.

9. Press the armature out by using a socket on the armature spindle. Take extra care to hold the armature on the bottom so it doesn't fall on the floor when it comes out.

If you do not have a press place the motor casing facing down on top of a vise, with the armature hanging between the jaws of the vise. Use a rubber mallet and tap the armature spindle until the armature comes out.

(Alternative Steps) If a press is not available:

8. Place the motor casing facing down on top of a vise, with the armature hanging between the jaws of the vise.

9. Use a rubber mallet and tap the armature spindle until the armature comes out.

The Porter Cable router armature is now removed, making it possible to remove the armature bearing on the spindle-end of the armature.
