My auto-feed isn't working and the lever (part 57) appears to be intact. Is there a component to the lever (or related part) that may have broken that I can't see w/out dismantling? Could there be another issue? All parts appear to be intact.
My Black & Decker Grass Hog 400 Type 1 was working just fine, then it just stopped. No odd sounds, no electrical smell...nothing. Could my on/off switch have blown? Is there a fuse? Is there a reset? I tried another extension cord, and that's not the problem. How do I troubleshoot this? Help, please! Thanks!
Black and Decker GH 400 trimmer Question by John G
I bought the replacement part feed lever. It is item #57 on the parts diagram. The part number is #385017-01.
I'm not sure which direction it goes in cause the original was taken out.

The big guard (part 5) has become loose and I'm wondering where the screw(s) are that would tighten it back. Is it part 50, the single screw that is inserted from underneath the guard? Is it just one screw? Do I have to take the spool out to see it?
Thanks
Just the single screw and you can see it without removing the spool - just clean away the grass on the underside of the guard.
Line feed part #57. Question by Timmy
The auto feed lever on my GH400 electric trimmer has broken off flush to base. Any suggestions, or, any way to take this apart? I tried to drill into what is left and pull it out with the drill bit but no luck. Can that head be pulled off? Thanks much
I think from reading the other posts, that I need to replace the lever ( part # 57 for my GH400 trimmer). The cord release is not measured and it tangles every time, around the shaft. My question is, how do I get that little lever out of there? I'm afraid to break it off by using too much pull. Thanks
z
First of all check to see that the lever is free moving and not binding up on any obstruction or even on itself. The lever on my trimmer broke completely off and that's why mine wouldn't release correctly. If yours is free moving, then it may be something else. Please make sure that you check that first.
Now, if it is, indeed, your lever, take a small flat screwdriver with a wide blade and gently pry it from its setting until you can firmly grasp it with a pair of pliers. With the pliers, pull up on the lever while twisting it back and forth off of it's mount and it should come free.
special tool? Question by Roger
Do the plastite screws require a special tool to remove them? Is it available?
The plastite screws are bet removed using a Torx driver. We have a Torx driver index available that includes all of the sizes that are commonly used in tool repair. The following link will provide additional information...
It is not the spring. It is the lever inside under the spool you put in and it is attached to the housing. It is called a lever #385017.1 see above diagram

Replace part # 57
Question by Dan
I put new line in the spool and when I pull the switch all the line comes out.
I have the same problem. It appears the spool housing mounted on the shaft has stripped out and the part has been discontinued. I hope I don't have to toss the trimmer, everything else works great.

My housing is doing the same. Falls off when I start the trimmer. Did anyone find a replacement part (Housing)?
Auto Spool Feed Failure Question by johnjulie
Although all the parts seem to be in place on my GH400 edger, the new line will not feed and breaks off 1 inch outside the spool housing. I thought there may be a part missing but that does not seem to be the case. Any help is appreciated.
The spool housing on my GH400 type 3 trimmer does not attach tothe motor spindal anylonger. Is there a replacement part for that? I can't seem to find one.
Thanks
