When the gear box on your grinder breaks, you don't have to replace the entire tool. You can order the gear box and replace it yourself in about 10 minutes.

If the gear box on your DeWalt grinder wears down or fails, you will want to replace it. A grinder with worn gears may not spin at the proper RPM--if it spins at all--so replacing the gear box will help you bring the grinder's performance to like-new levels.

Remember to use our DeWalt parts finder to find all the right parts for your DeWalt tools.

Replacing the Gear Box

1. Remove the grinder accessories

Unscrew the handle.

Remove the grinding wheel.

Release the tension on the guard and remove it.

2. Remove the gear box cover

Remove the four screws that secure the gear box cover. Be sure you get the gasket along with the cover.

3. Remove the gear box

Remove the four screws that fasten the gear box to the body, then slide the gear box away from the grinder.

4. Install the new gear box

Slide the new gear box into place and be sure the gears mesh. Then fasten the gear box with the screws.

5. Install the cover

Now you can install the old cover onto the new gear box.

6. Re-install the accessories

Re-attach the handle, guard, and grinding wheel to finalize the repair.
