The bump head spring applies tension to the bump head knob. Its job is to return the knob to its normal position after it has been bumped against the ground to feed more line. Over time, the spring can weaken. When this happens, the trimmer may begin to feed line inconsistently. Replacing the spring is very easy to do.

This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the bump head spring on a Ryobi trimmer.

The Fix   REMOVING THE SPRING [top] 1. Remove the reel and line assembly.

Unscrew (and remove) the bump head knob.

Slide the bump head spring away from the knob assembly.

  INSTALLING THE NEW SPRING [top] 2. Install the bump head spring.

Press the new bump spring onto the bump head knob.

Install the bump head knob assembly onto the shaft.

Install the bump knob

 

 

Compress the spring while rotating the bump head knob until the internal threads engage.

Continue rotating the bump head knob until the assembly is hand-tight.
