String trimmer out of whack? It's time to face the fix. Whether you are a legendary landscaper or a weekend weed whacker, eReplacementParts.com provides the parts, procedures and facts you need to fearlessly fix what fails you.
The incoming fuel pipe supplies the carburetor with fuel. It attaches to the fuel filter (inside the fuel tank) and to the carburetor's intake port. Because the fuel pipe is made of rubber, it will eventually begin to harden and crack. Fortunately, replacing the fuel pipe is easy to do.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the incoming fuel pipe on an Echo trimmer (model SRM-225).
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE FUEL PIPE [top] 1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
Loosen the thumb screw.
Remove the air cleaner lid.
Remove the air filter.
2. Drain the fuel.
Drain any excess fuel from the tank before servicing the unit.
3. Remove the fuel cap.
Unscrew and remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank.
4. Remove the incoming fuel pipe.
To make your own fuel line retriever; curve the end of a sturdy length of wire into the shape of a hook.
Insert the wire hook into the fuel tank and retrieve the line containing the fuel filter.
Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line with a twisting and pulling motion.
Remove the fuel line clip.
Disconnect the incoming fuel pipe from the carburetor inlet.
Remove the incoming fuel pipe from the fuel tank (slide the tube up and out of the tank grommet).
INSTALLING THE NEW FUEL PIPE [top]
5. Install the incoming fuel pipe.
To make installation into the fuel tank (through the grommet) simpler, use wire cutters to cut a taper at the end of the fuel pipe.
Lightly lubricate the tapered end of the fuel pipe with 2-cycle engine oil (this will allow the tube to pass through the grommet more smoothly).
Thread the tapered end of the new fuel pipe through the tank grommet and into the fuel tank.
Continue feeding the excess pipe into the fuel tank until the exposed end of the pipe aligns with the carburetor inlet.
Connect the exposed end of the incoming fuel pipe to the carburetor inlet.
REASSEMBLING THE UNIT [top] 6. Reinstall the fuel filter.
Use the wire hook (created earlier) to retrieve the fuel pipe from inside the fuel tank.
Use wire cutters or scissors to remove the taper (cut earlier) from the new pipe. (The fuel pipe must be cut squarely to install the fuel filter).
Slide the fuel line clip over the new fuel pipe and hold the clip approximately 1/4 of an inch from the end of the pipe.
Install the fuel filter onto the end of the new fuel pipe. The clip should expand slightly to accommodate the flared connection, and then tighten around the narrower portion of the fitting. Perform this step in one continuous motion. If the clip slides backwards (further onto the onto the fuel tube), reposition the clip and start again.
7. Reinstall the fuel filter into the fuel tank.
Insert the fuel filter (and fuel line) into the fuel tank.
8. Reinstall the fuel cap.
Reinstall the fuel cap onto the fuel tank.
9. Reinstall the air filter.
Install the air filter into the air cleaner lid.
10. Reinstall the air filter lid.
Install the air filter lid onto the air cleaner case.
Secure the air filter lid with the thumbscrew.
